Portugal has always been world-famous for its excellent wine. Portuguese red wines vary according to their species and areas where wine is grown. Strong red wines are produced in the Douro Valley, which are made either from a blend of varieties of wine or from vines, where old vines of mixed varieties are planted together. Light red wines (Vinho Verde) are produced on the windy Atlantic coast, where the climate is harsher, but thanks to the maceration of the fruit, the color is more intense and the taste more balanced. Portugal also produces excellent red and white port wine.
